Explanation of Search3
Basic Overview
Search3 is our current item search. It can be launched on any one of our websites with a given host and custom options in the following way: host/_CGI/SEARCH3?options.
The order in which the results are sorted is by relevance, unless a custom sort is used. Our relevance algorithm gives item A precedence over item B if A has a condition, while B lacks that condition. If B has the condition and A doesn't, then B is given precedence. In order, the conditions our current search algorithm checks are: picture, special price, rebate, current model, etc. until it gets to the bottom, where it then sorts alphabetically by the model number.
The options below can all be used while conducting a Search3. These should be entered in the form option=value. Multiple options should be & delimited, e.g., pn=electrolux&type=appliance. Multiple values should be | delimited, e.g., pn=electrolux|ge&type=appliance|lawn|electronics.
Note that multiple options create a logical conjunction search. So, if one searches pn=twin beds&type=mattress, then the search being conducted is a search for the phrase twin beds, and any items matching this phrase must also have the type set as mattress. In contrast to this, multiple values for a given option yield a logical disjunction search. If one searches type=lawn|mattress|appliance, then all of the items which have a type of either lawn, mattress, or appliance will be returned. Any combination of multiple options and values can be used while searching, as long as the multiple values used are only for the string options below.
Thorough Explanation
Once a search job is launched, the search term entered is cleaned for any non alpha numeric characters. Once clean, it goes through our search phase. This consists of rewriting the search term to match a specific major, minor, or brand if appropriate. (As an example, during this phase, the search term electrolux washer will get rewritten to a search for the term washer, specifically for the brand Electorlux.) Then, the rewritten term is matched against every item in our database, and if a match is found, it is added to an unfiltered result set and counted appropriately. (The only options that can be used as filters during this stage are the raw filter options.)
Next, it will go through a filtration process, which will ingore any items from the unfiltered result set that don't match the given filters, and count the matches appropriately. (The filters used during this step are the ones labeled String sort options below.) This result set is called the filtered result set.
Finally, when presenting the search results to the client, frontend 'script' functions are used to iterate through the given result sets and items. The results that the client sees come from the script function for_each_item, which will iterate through the filtered result set. In generating the sidebar, slightly different logic is used in the presented options. As an example, a search for air conditioners is done on this page . Notice that the Cooling Power filter presents some options. (At the time of this writing, the sidebar had three options: 1 - 9000 BTU, 9000 - 12000 BTU and 12000 - 15000 BTU. This represents the applicable filtered results.) Now, click on one of the options. Note that it has much more sidebar options after the option was clicked. This is because the sidebar Cooling Power option is now reflecting the unfiltered results. This may seem counter intuitive, but this is done to ensure the client can always access the relevant information. If the filtered result set was used in that sidebar option, then it would only have one option, the one the client selected. Then, the client wouldn't be able to select more options for that filter, which could potentially lose a sale.
